I once heard the mother of an autistic child describe her life as "having my heart broken every day." As the dad of a 9-year-old autistic boy, I find the latest calls for "mandate relief" have a familiar and disturbing ring. And, yes, they are a little heartbreaking.
The persuasion and advocacy skills Brad Gerstman developed as an attorney are now being used to fight for clients at Gotham Government Relations, his Roslyn-based firm. Governor Paterson vetoed Bill S7000B, a ground-breaking new bill that would have provided families of autistic children with much-needed insurance coverage. On Monday, October 11th, the Lisa Beth Gerstman Foundation (LBGF) will hold its 7th annual Lisa Beth Gerstman Foundation Golf Classic at the Glen Head Country Club, honoring Home Depot President Joe McFarland. This outing is one of the foundation's biggest annual events and has record attendance this year. LBGF is a 501c3 charity, dedicated to helping children with disabilities attend summer camp.
Gotham Government Relations is pleased to announce its participation in working to pass a new bill ending Autism insurance discrimination. Bill Number S7000, sponsored by Senator Neil Breslin, the Chair of the Senate Insurance Committee, will amend the insurance law and the public health law. The bill will also expand health insurance coverage for the screening, diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorders.
