July 9, 2012; Roslyn, NY- Yesterday afternoon Rapper 50 cent took to twitter to issue a long awaited apology for his insensitive and controversial remarks concerning children with developmental disabilities. The tweet, which read “I realize my autism comments were insensitive, however it was not my intention to offend anyone and for this I apologize,” came in the wake of unrelenting pressure from autism activists including well known New York advocate Bradley Gerstman and celebrity supporter Holly Robinson Peete. The frustration of advocates was reinforced by a slew of twitter buzz denouncing the rapper for his disrespect.

“Insensitivity to those with developmental disabilities, especially by those in the spotlight, is particularly distressing. Considering the difficulties that these individuals are forced to face every day, we expect support from those who are looked to as role models within the community,” says Brad Gerstman. “It is a relief to hear that 50 cent has finally issued an apology to the autism community, and I appreciate his decision to take responsibility for those thoughtless remarks.”

The outrage expressed by advocates, families and enraged citizens has reinforced a message of tolerance and support for those suffering with developmental disabilities. Gerstman considers, “Perhaps this experience has reminded a younger generation of social media users and rap enthusiasts that ignorance is never in fashion, no matter how many records you sell.”
