July 3, 2012; Roslyn, NY- Yesterday evening notorious rapper 50 cent created an angry storm of outrage and disappointment as he reportedly took to twitter with insensitive comments concerning children with developmental disabilities. The tweet, which read “I do not want no special ed kids on my timeline follow somebody else #SMSaudio”, has left children, families and advocates both saddened and enraged. Well known Autism advocate Bradley Gerstman is now calling upon all autism groups to demand an apology and retraction of comments by the rapper.

“Insensitivity to those with developmental disabilities, especially by those in the spotlight, is particularly distressing. Considering the difficulties that these individuals are forced to face every day, we expect support from those who are looked to as role models within the community,” says Brad Gerstman. Autism awareness groups and families throughout the country have worked to build a foundation of compassion and assistance for those born with special needs. We will not allow ignorance to deter that focus, or endanger the movement we have built.”

A backlash from concerned citizens and outraged advocates is only the beginning of this soon to be show down. The commentary made by 50 cent has sent a dangerous message to the millions of individuals that follow him, as well as the autism community as a whole. Gerstman is now urging individuals nationwide to demand a request for forgiveness from the rapper, and reminding all advocates of children with special needs that this act of ignorance will not impede on the progress continually made each and every day.
